We had some trouble with customs flying out of Montreal yesterday. Well, I was able to enter the US with no problem, although it did take a little longer to staple my fancy visa into my passport. Sarah was not so fortunate. I'll let her tell you about it.
Yes, I was pulled aside at customs. They were suspicious of the amount of luggage I was bringing with me. I had two pieces of checked baggage, which I didn't think would be a problem because I thought people bring two suitcases all the time when they travel. Also, I usually bring one suitcase when I go somewhere for two weeks, so doesn't it make sense to bring two when going for five weeks? Anyway, the major thing that helped me out was that I had the printout of my return flight in March, proving that I was in fact returning to Canada. I suspect that having that was the reason they let me in. It helped as well that I said I was staying with my boyfriend, because they wondered how, if I was not working, I would pay for my stay. Regardless of all this, I did get a talking-to, with the customs agent saying that I need to actually return in March, and that it is quite a long visit for me to be taking. So for everyone travelling to the US, make sure you have all your travel information with you, and be prepared to answer lots of questions intending to find out whether you're trying to live illegally in the US.
Speaking of our balcony, I already know it's going to be my favourite part of the apartment. Case in point is a little bit of balcony furniture I set up today.
The hammock isn't entirely secure out there yet as it's hanging on preexisting hooks, but I've got some new ones that should give me the confidence to fully sit back on it and enjoy my new perch. For those of you who don't know, I cashed in my life's savings of Canadian Tire money to buy this hammock. Maple syrup is in my blood; I will always carry Canada with me.
It's getting late, and I have an early day tomorrow - my first day at Google.
